HISTORY MEME : (1/9) Kings/Queens - Queen Razia Sultan
Raziyya al-Din (1205 – October 13, 1240) usually referred to in history as Razia Sultan, was the Queen of Delhi in India from 1236 to May 1240. Like some other Muslim princesses of the time, she was trained to lead armies and administer kingdoms if necessary. Razia Sultana was the only woman ruler of both the Sultanate and the Mughal period. She succeeded her father Shams-ud-din Iltutmish to the Sultanate of Delhi in 1236. Iltutmish became the first sultan to appoint a woman as his successor when he designated his daughter Razia as his heir apparent. She dressed like a man and sat in open durbar. She was an efficient ruler and possessed all the qualities of a Monarch. As a child and adolescent, Razia had little contact with the women of the harem, so she had not learnt the customary behavior of women in the Muslim society that she was born into. As Sultan, Razia preferred a man’s tunic and headdress; and contrary to custom, she would later show her face when she rode an elephant into battle at the head of her army. (+)
And so why is she shown in a hyper-feminized, whitened picture?
Razia was a part of the Mamluk Dynasty which consisted of people from the Turkic race. Her ancestors were either from Central Asia or Western Europe . Basically they were either Persian , Turkish , Russian or Afghani people. So yes they would’ve been ‘white’ in colour.
history meme ∙ (2/7) pairings ∙ hadrian & antinous
Hadrian had a close relationship with a Bithynian Greek youth, Antinous, which was most likely sexual. During a journey on the Nile he lost Antinous, his favourite, and for this youth he wept like a woman. Concerning this incident there are varying rumours; for some claim that he had devoted himself to death for Hadrian, and others — what both his beauty and Hadrian’s sensuality suggest. But however this may be, the Greeks deified him at Hadrian’s request, and declared that oracles were given through his agency, but these, it is commonly asserted, were composed by Hadrian himself. Antinous drowned in 130. Deeply saddened, Hadrian founded the Egyptian city of Antinopolis in his memory, and had Antinous deified – an unprecedented honour for one not of the ruling family. The cult of Antinous became very popular in the Greek-speaking world. (requested by anon)
